Naval Architect

The Naval Architect will take part in project management, production, sales, training, software development and support of leading-edge software products for ships and offshore floating structures. Herbert-ABS software focuses on floating stability, strength, load management, salvage engineering, and intact and damage stability assessments. The Naval Architect will have the opportunity to work at a small company with other professionals that work closely together, enjoy their work, and produce quality software products for the maritime and offshore industries.

The ideal candidate will have a strong academic record and a BS degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering or Ocean Engineering. Programming experience, specifically Python, is highly desirable.

Job Requirements:

  • Up to five years experience overall; experience working with ship stability and strength is a plus

  • Interest in traveling for software support, training and installations, including client visits, shipboard visits and possibly international travel

  • Must work well with people and possess good oral and written communications skills

  • Good organizational skills (will be working on many projects simultaneously)

  • Understanding of scheduling and an ability to adhere to strict deadlines

  • Strong work ethic and dedication

Responsibilities:

  • Project management of loading and stability software production

  • Product management responsibilities for software, including marketing, client support, and training

  • Utilizing Python skills to develop HECSALV, HECSTAB and CargoMax features, reports and tools

  • Travel for software training, support and installations

  • Interface with clients, coworkers and Classification Societies on software projects

  • Perform calculations applying naval architecture principles and applicable Class rules and regulations

  • Test, validate and report software performance issues and improvement possibilities. Use technical skills to diagnose, streamline and create custom solutions for client-specific workflows, new software features, and enhancements.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture or other applicable discipline

  • 0-5 years of professional engineering experience

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Proficiency in programming, specifically Python

  • Familiarity with Herbert-ABS software packages is a plus.

  • Experience with USCG and ABS regulations is a plus.

  • Must have a US Citizenship (due to US Government work falling under ITAR restrictions)

The location for this position can be discussed, but would likely start with a temporary placement (~1 year) in our Alameda, CA office for onboarding & training, and then transition to remote work. A successful hire will quickly be brought into a HECSALV/HECSTAB product management position, to handle client technical support, sales, marketing and training, while also becoming an expert in stability calculations and analyses for internal testing and validation. As a secondary responsibility, the new hire will assist with CargoMax project management and contribute to implementing and streamlining the next generation of CargoMax. This position will require regular travel for client hardware and software installation, training and marketing. A successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and is able to work both independently, and as a part of an interdisciplinary team.
